After graduating from the Department of Architecture at Kanto Gakuin University, Itsuko Hasegawa became a research student in the Department of Architecture at Tokyo Institute of Technology. In 1979 she established Itsuko Hasegawa Atelier. Her projects include a variety of houses and public buildings. In 1986 she received the Design Prize from the Architectural Institute of Japan for her Bizan Hall project. Her residential projects also earned a Japan Cultural Design Award. She won first prize in the open competition for the Shonandai Cultural Center. In 1997 she was elected as one of the Honorary Fellows of RIBA. She has completed her winning entry for the Niigata City Performing-Arts Center and Area Development. In 2000 she received the Japan Art Academy Award. In 2001 she received the Honorary Degree Award at University College London. In 2006 she was elected as one of the Honorary Fellows of AIA.

KANVA - Projects that are engaging, memorable and responsive to human experience and contemporary culture.
Composed of a collective of dynamic architects, KANVA is a young architectural firm whose work is at the forefront of thinking, imagining, drawing and constructing in Montreal and beyond. Their big ideas, gestures and approach to contemporary issues have gained local, national and international attention. KANVA is the recipient of the prestigious Award of Excellence for Innovation in Architecture by the Royal Architecture Institute of Canada for their mixed-use residential project Irene. Recently they won the international competition hosted by Space for Life to re-design the Biôdome for Montreal’s 375th anniversary.
With over ten years of experience designing a range of project types, including student housing, large-scale public art installations, mixed-use buildings, corporate and public spaces, KANVA treats each project as an opportunity to transform the built environment through story-telling. Each project is engaging, memorable and responsive to human experience and contemporary culture. Ángela García de Paredes (Madrid 1958, ETSAM 1982, PhD 2015) and Ignacio Pedrosa (Madrid 1957, ETSAM 1983, PhD 2015) established the architectural firm PAREDES PEDROSA in 1990, after collaborating with José M. García de Paredes.
Professors at the Architectural Design Department in Madrid School of Architecture, they are also visiting professors in the architecture schools of Pamplona, ESARQ UIC in Barcelona and IUAV in Venice and critics and lecturers at several Universities as GSD Harvard, ETH Zurich, Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio, EPFL Lausanne, TU München, TU Graz, FADU Buenos Aires e Ibero en México, among others.
Their built work after first prize competitions include: Town Hall in Valdemaqueda, Valle Inclán Theatre in Madrid, Archaeology Museum in Almeria, Peñíscola Congress Centre, Espacio Torner in Cuenca, La Olmeda Roman Villa Museum in Palencia, UPI School in Gandía, Ceuta Public Library, Lugo Auditorium and Córdoba Public Library, the latter under construction. Other first prize competitions are Borghetto Flaminio in Roma and recently the Visigoth Museum in Mérida and Jaén Justice Court.
Awarded by the Government of Spain with the Spain Fine Arts Gold Medal 2014 and Spain Architecture Award 2007. Founded in 2004 by Koichi Suzuno and Shinya Kamuro, TORAFU ARCHITECTS employs a working approach based on architectural thinking. Works by the duo include a diverse range of products, from architectural design to interior design, exhibition space design, product design, spatial installations and film making.

Selldorf Architects is a 65-person architectural design practice founded by Annabelle Selldorf in New York City in 1988. ANNABELLE SELLDORF, FAIA
Annabelle Selldorf is the Principal of Selldorf Architects. Born and raised in Germany, she received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Pratt Institute and a Master of Architecture degree from Syracuse University in Florence, Italy. She is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and serves on the Board of the Architectural League of New York, the World Monuments Fund, the Chinati Foundation, and the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College. In 2017, Ms. Selldorf was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, three years after receiving the organization’s prestigious Award in Architecture. She is also the recipient of the 2016 Medal of Honor from the American Institute of Architecture New York Chapter.

Contemporary and modern architecture of Iran will be presented at Archi-Depot, a museum in Tokyo, Japan, dedicated to architecture models.
Iranian architect Mehrdad Zavareh-Mohammadi has curated the exhibition of Iranian architecture due to open March 6.
The event is being organized following an invitation from the Architectural Institute of Japan. An estimated 80 architecture models will be displayed at Archi-Depot. The models are from projects that have already been completed and include houses, apartments and villas, ISNA reported.
The two-month exhibit will include three sections. The first will represent architecture from the First Pahlavi period (1941-1979). “This section includes 20 prominent projects such as the iconic Azadi Tower, City Theater, Tehran Museum of Contemporary Arts, Carpet Museum, Niavaran Cultural Center and the senate building (all in Tehran),” Zavareh-Mohammadi said.
The buildings will be presented via models, slide projection, videos, documents, graphs and blueprints. About the second section, he said it will comprise projects designed for various Iranian cities by notable architects from Japan and other nations. “The projects were suspended for a variety of reasons including the Islamic Revolution in 1979.”
The third section contains contemporary projects in the four categories of public, infill (rezoning of land in an urban environment, usually open space, to new construction), monad (isolated self-sufficient and smart constructions in nature) and unbuilt projects of large dimensions.
“On the sidelines of the exhibition, scientific and research symposiums will be held, where notable architects such as Arata Isozaki, 86, and Riichi Miyake, 69, from Japan, as well as Ali Kermanian from Iran will speak.
After Tokyo the exhibition will be held in Tehran, Isfahan, Shiraz and Mashhad.

SuperAdobe is a form of earth bag architecture developed by architect and CalEarth founder Nader Khalili. Using long sandbags ("SuperAdobe Bags"), barbed wire, on-site earth and a few tools, Khalili devised a revolutionary building system that integrates traditional earth architecture with contemporary global safety requirements, and passes severe earthquake code tests in California.
This technology has been published by NASA, endorsed by the United Nations, featured in countless world media outlets, and awarded the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2004. It comes from years of meditation, hands-on research and development. Inspired by traditional earth architecture in the deserts of Iran and adapted for modern usage. Simplified so that anyone can build.
CALEARTH AND RUMI
Many find it interesting that there is a strong connection between CalEarth and the poetry of Rumi, a Persian mystic who lived over 800 years ago. There is a Rumi Dome on site, books of poetry for sale in the bookstore, and Rumi stories shared during the Open House, but what's the origin of this connection? The founder of CalEarth, Nader Khalili (1936-2008) looked to Rumi for inspiration through most of his adult life, and remnants of this inspiration can be found in many of the buildings and designs.
For 25 years, Nader Khalili’s specialty as an architect was skyscrapers. Then at thirty-eight, his turning point in life, he “… bought a motorcycle and went to the desert for five years in Iran to see what the solution was for sheltering the poor in the world and to learn from what already existed. There [he] got to know five personalities: earth, water, air, fire and Rumi, the 800 year old Persian mystic poet...." Rumi taught him the unity of these universal elements, forming his "Archemy" — architecture and alchemy. Water is fire, earth is water, and there is a unity in all elements.
In Rumi, Dancing the Flame, Khalili wrote, “I have also discovered, dealing with these universal elements for my own earth-and-fire architecture, that Rumi, more than any other individual has dealt with fire and water, or earth and wind, and yet no one to my knowledge has looked at Rumi’s life and works through these elements. I have been blessed by making my life’s work following this narrow stream springing form the ocean that is Rumi.”
In addition to his revolutionary earth architecture and Superadobe techniques, a great part of his life’s work was translating Rumi’s Rubaiyat and Diwan-i Shams-i Tabrizi. “In the last seven hundred years many millions have lit their candles from Rumi’s fire and I feel I am one of them—awake or dreaming.”

Amanda Levete has won the 2018 AJ/AR Jane Drew Prize, whose previous recipients include Zaha Hadid and Denise Scott Brown. Meanwhile, OMA co-founder and artist Madelon Vriesendorp has won the 2018 Ada Louise Huxtable Prize.
Levete is the seventh winner of the revitalised Jane Drew Prize, an award recognising an architectural designer who, through their work and commitment to design excellence, has raised the profile of women in architecture.
She first made her name as half of Future Systems, a practice she ran with her then-husband Jan Kaplický with whom she designed the Lord’s Media Centre, winner of the 1999 RIBA Stirling Prize, as well as the futuristic Birmingham Selfridges.
She started her solo career less than a decade ago, setting up AL_A. The practice is best known for Lisbon’s Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, which opened in 2016, and the V&A’s new courtyard and Sainsbury Gallery, which opened last year. Both projects feature complex ceramic tiling and open public spaces, reflecting Levete’s fascination with the sensuality of materials and her concern for the provision of social space in cities.
