DOMO ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN has put forward the idea of "Trump's Mexican Wall" to be constructed from 750,000 containers as a 'people' and 'eco' friendly solution to the controversial plan by the US President.
Francisco Llado and Robert Moehring of Domo Architecture and Design don’t believe their work is political either, as they design a 2,000 mile long wall along the Mexican border, to be built out of shipping containers. They told the website Real Deal:
“This is an eco-friendly, sustainable solution,” principal Francisco Llado said. It would require 750,000 recycled shipping containers, which could be donated, he said….“There are other ways to build a border that is friendly and open instead of building a concrete wall,” Moering added.
They are also quoted in a recent post in Politico, where they describe the wall as having eco-friendly features like solar panels and even micro-housing, again stressing that their work is not political.

How can we design kinetic, living architecture that engages with visitors during extended interactions and enhances human experience in an immersive environment?
How do humans respond to these evolving interactions, in a process of mutual adaptation?
Can architecture integrate living functions? Could future buildings think, and care? The Living Architecture Systems Group brings together researchers and industry partners in a multidisciplinary research cluster dedicated to developing built environments with qualities that come close to life— environments that can move, respond, and learn, with metabolisms that can exchange and renew their environments, and which are adaptive and empathic towards their inhabitants. Supported by Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council funding and contributions from numerous partners, LAS is focused on developing innovative technologies, new critical aesthetics, and integrative design working methods, helping equip a new generation of designers with critical next-generation skills and critical perspectives for working with complex environments.
The research of LAS has the potential to change how we build by transforming the physical structures that support buildings and the technical systems that control them. Intelligent controls, machine learning, lightweight scaffolds, kinetic mechanisms, and self-renewing synthetic biology systems are being integrated in prototypes, exploring how these different systems might be fully integrated into new generations of buildings. Specializations are in advanced structures, mechanisms, control systems, machine learning, human-machine interaction, synthetic biology, and psychological testing. The combined expertise of the group offers unique integrated design, prototyping and public demonstration facilities.

Barkow Leibinger is an American/German architectural practice based in Berlin and New York, founded in 1993 by Frank Barkow and Regine Leibinger.
Their discursive research-based approach to architecture and design allows Barkow Leibinger’s work to respond to advancing knowledge and technology, locating the practice as an international leader in digital and analogue fabrication techniques. This know-how expands to include new materials and their applications in driving the practice forward, a continuously evolving activity. The office’s focus revolves around a commitment to academic teaching, research and the practice itself — each are autonomous work areas, which simultaneously inform one another. This approach manifests distinctly in each project through the interrelationships within client-architect dialogue, location, aesthetics, and purpose.
Barkow Leibinger’s work is realized over a wide range of scales and building types including building for workplace (industry, office, and master planning), cultural, housing, event spaces, as well as exhibitions and installations in the public realm internationally. Recently completed buildings include the Trumpf Smart Factory in Chicago, the Fellows Pavilion for the American Academy in Berlin, the HAWE Factory Kaufbeuren and the Tour Total office high-rise in Berlin.
Their work was included in the Serpentine Summer House program 2016 in London and will be shown in the 2nd Chicago Architecture Biennial 2017. It was also shown in the 4th Marrakech Biennale, the 14th and the 11th Architecture Biennale, Venice, and is housed in the permanent collections of MoMA, New York, and the Deutsches Architekturmuseum, Frankfurt. They have won four National AIA Honor Awards for Architecture and a Global Holcim Innovation Award for sustainability as well as various German architecture awards.

Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group, Amager Resource Center in Copenhagen is a new breed of waste-to-energy plant, transforming an industrial utility into an awe-inspiring public space complete with a ski slope.
Touted as the cleanest waste-to-energy plant in the world, the 241-square-metre centre will provide 97 percent of homes with heating, and reduce sulphur dioxide emissions by 99.5 percent and nitrous oxide by 90 percent compared with the plant it will replace. And the minimal emissions it does produce will form something of a public service announcement on air pollution: its smokestack will emit five smoke rings for every tonne of CO2 output.
Amager is part of Copenhagen’s plan to become the world’s first zero-carbon city by 2025.

Folie Divine is the first of two ‘folies’ planned by the City of Montpellier on its brownfield sites, as a continuation of a history dating back to the eighteenth century, when local aristocrats and the bourgeoise commissioned architects to build spectacular grand mansions in garden settings, such as the castles of Flaugergues, de la Mogère and de la Mosson. However in French and English gardens, the idea of Folie has a longer history in which a playful structure with no practical purpose would be placed within a garden or landscape to elicit pleasure, luxury and wealth. As an idea, the Folie therefore plays with this leap beyond mere practicality.
FMA’s proposal for Folie Divine is based upon the understanding that the City of Montpellier, by setting the Folie as the brief for a residential building, was asking how the Folie's playful character could be used as a critical tool to generate a new possibility for the architecture of housing.
The site is located on Îlot M2 within Les Jardins de la Lironde- an urban development area on Montpellier’s periphery, master-planned by Christian de Portzamparc. To the west, it borders a river and residential neighbourhoods to its north, east and west. The site therefore enjoys tranquillity as well as a pleasant Mediterranean climate.
Architecture: Luxury as choice
The architecture of Folie Divine defies the typical notion of residential luxury as synonymous with the use of expensive materials. Instead, it redefines luxury in three ways: a variety of spatial choices beyond bedroom count to compliment one’s unique lifestyle, the flexibility to modify one’s home as and when required, and finally the freedom to enjoy both interior and exterior spaces of the home in utmost privacy.
The initial brief requested five different apartment types. Folie Divine, through its unique assembly of floor plates, balconies and structure, provides its residents with 36 apartment types.
Massing: Environmental sustainability
The building is designed as a 9-storey tower (the maximum height permitted by the masterplan for the area)in order to achieve a compact footprint and provide the apartments with views of the sea as well as the city centre in the distance. Its compact footprint also allows the rest of the site to be used for a garden, giving the building a Folie like setting and creating corner apartments which benefit from two aspects and cross natural ventilation. The massing of the building therefore increases sustainability through reduced land occupation.
Balconies: Privacy, Indoor-Outdoor living, Choice, Environmental sustainability
To enable indoor-outdoor living, all apartments are designed with curvilinear balconies that taper at each end to obviate the need for balcony dividing walls between neighbours, which typically obstruct lateral views out of balconies. To avoid overlapping views between neighbours, the curvilinear balconies are strategically located with respect to one another, so that each balcony enjoys 180 degree views out but never into the neighbouring balcony. In addition, four different floor configurations are used, each with differing balcony locations stacked in alternating order to ensure that neighbouring balconies are two levels apart from each other. This minimises downward views from one neighbour to another and creates the choice of two balcony types throughout the building: a single height balcony, shaded by the level above and designed with exterior curtains for additional privacy and wind protection, and, a double height balcony which benefits from maximum sun exposure and provides the possibility of maintaining taller house plants.
To reinforce privacy in the balconies, the handrails are designed with double points of support, arranged along two parallel lines and offset from one another. The double points of support, compared to a single support at double the width, provides the views out of the balconies with greater transparency and minimizes views in from the exterior, as the double points of support generate a moiré like pattern when viewed at an oblique. The unusual degree of privacy and choice created by the shape and location of balconies, as well as their moiré handrails and exterior curtains, will promote indoor-outdoor living. Since the balconies are almost as private as interior spaces, they can be used as an extension of them. For instance, a resident has requested his balcony structure to be reinforced to install a jacuzzi.
Structure and Building Materiality: User Empowerment
To provide residents with the option of apartment subdivision following their unique lifestyles, the structure of the building is located along the vertical core, the façade and the party wall between neighbouring apartments. The apartments are therefore free of a load-bearing structure and empower residents to reconfigure their interiors at their own pace as and when their requirements change. Initial owners have already customised their internal wall placements, and each apartment has consequently acquired a unique layout. Two apartments were also purchased by one family and combined into a single home.
To minimise the need for building maintenance over time and the associated costs that could burden residents, the building envelope is clad in corrugated anodized aluminium metal panelling and glass, whilst hardwood flooring is used for the balconies.

The arts, as with any other discipline, can play a role in this, within a network of correlations and interrelated ecosystems of where I, you, we live. Once we wish for something, everything else can be achieved. The problem lies in stimulating these wishes. Many ideas are in a latent state, needing to be translated, interpreted … but nothing is more real than our engagement in a dialogue.."
Tomás Saraceno’s (b.1973, Argentina) oeuvre could be seen as an ongoing research, informed by the worlds of art, architecture, natural sciences, astrophysics and engineering; his floating sculptures, community projects and interactive installations propose and explore new, sustainable ways of inhabiting and sensing the environment. Aerocene, an open-source community project for artistic and scientific exploration initiated from Saraceno’s vision, becomes buoyant only by the heat of the Sun and infrared radiation from the surface of Earth.
In 2015, Saraceno achieved the world record for the first and longest certified fully-solar manned flight. During the past decade, he has initiated collaborations with renowned scientific institutions, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Max Planck Institute, the Nanyang Technological University of Singapore, and the Natural History Museum London.
He was the first person to scan, reconstruct and reimagine spiders’ weaved spatial habitats, and possesses the only three-dimensional spider web collection to existence. Saraceno lectures in institutions worldwide, and directed the Institute of Architecture-related Art (IAK) at Braunschweig University of Technology, Germany (2014–2016). He has held residencies at Centre National d’Études Spatiales (2014–2015), MIT Center for Art, Science & Technology (2012–ongoing) and Atelier Calder (2010), among others. In 2009, Saraceno attended the International Space Studies Program at NASA Ames. The same year he presented a major installation at the 53rd Venice Biennale, and was later awarded the prestigious Calder Prize. His work has been widely exhibited internationally in solo and group exhibitions such as Aerocene, at Solutions COP21, Grand Palais, Paris; Arachnid Orchestra. ABOUT LETTERS TO THE MAYOR
Letters to the Mayor is an itinerant exhibition that displays real letters written by architects to their city mayors. Initiated by Storefront for Art and Architecture in 2014, the project has traveled to more than 15 cities across the globe, including Bogota, Mexico City, Athens, Panama City, Taipei, Mariupol, Madrid, Lisbon, and Buenos Aires, among others.
Letters to the Mayor invites 100 architects in each city to write a letter to their mayor as a means of bringing innovative ideas and visions of the city closer to the decision-makers, and vice versa.
Throughout history, architects have engaged with this responsibility and the structures of economic, political, and cultural power in different ways and with varying degrees of success. With the rise of globalization and the homogenization of the contemporary city, the role of the architect in the political arena has often been relegated to answering questions that others have asked.
Letters to the Mayor questions this dynamic, and invites local and global architects to deliver their thoughts directly to the desks of elected officials, and simultaneously into the public consciousness.

Vito Acconci is an American artist and architect. Best known for his provocative and often radical art-making practices. Acconci has been a vital presence in contemporary art since the late 1960s; his confrontational and ultimately political works have evolved from writing through conceptual art, bodyworks, performance, film, video, multimedia installation and architectural sculpture. In the mid 1980s, Acconci began creating experimental architecture, design, and public sculpture. In 1988, he set up Acconci Studio, an architectural practice that executes public commissions around the world.

The project is located in the UNESCO protected site Casco Viejo, Panama City. the 16,000 square meter program includes : 159 rooms, Restaurants, open plaza, rooftop bar, spa, pool, gym, Conference rooms and a ballroom; all within a defined architectural language regulated by the Panamanian Heritage Foundation.
The building is placed between land and water, having 40% of the structure supported on by micropiles in the Panama Bay.
This element has made the studio give direct responses in material use and solutions for weather related events safety response. This project was assigned to the studio all the way to construction completion, being the operator a sole investor, in which case the firm has also provided operational advise and budget revision, along for the design development.
