From the beginning he develops an own style with strong personality. He handles shapes, volumes and light sources fluently in a simple and elegant way, masterfully mixing them and bringing a new vision of creative lighting, coming to conceive in the spaces surprising scenographic and light staging. Currently he continues to explore different lines of work and expression.
In the early nineties he gets interested in the flat glass and learns the techniques of stained glass and tiffany for making lamps. He starts creating luminaries, from ancient techniques, but with a language of its time, contemporary, with Art deco and Art nouveu touches. Over the years he walks and identifies with the Bauhaus concepts of joining and reviewing shapes, volumes, prospects and plans to a careful craftwork.
There are three defined times in the career of Arturo Alvarez. In the early years he explores and works with figurative concepts based on nature. In a second time he progresses toward abstraction exploring simple geometric shapes without abandoning references to nature, it appears the female body, a theme that is repeated and which he keeps on researching along the years. Arturo Álvarez is currently developing new forms of expression, with light as his guiding thread and with the human being and its relations as the main subject, with its lights and shadows, encounters and missed encounters, issues of concern and he deepens from different techniques.
In the last ten years he has been conducting a comprehensive experimental and research work to develop his own materials that allow him a more creative freedom and expressiveness. He takes them out of their common uses, mixing them and transforming them into something new and unique. He creates and patents SIMETECH®, a translucent material which can be molded to obtain different textures.

As part of Venice Design’s Time, Space Existence exhibition, The Birth Chair II will be featured for the first time in acrylic. In addition, the exhibit will reveal four new designs including the incorporation of African textiles into the modular backrests.
The Birth Chair II is inspired by African birthing chairs, which are still used in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa. Like most home furnishings in African countries, it is both utilitarian and decorative as well as a functional furniture that is also a work of art. Jomo original model is modular, with swappable backrests featuring various designs. Spare backrests can be displayed as decor. The ultimate design is modern, though rooted in African history.
Jomo’s unique exhibition ushers in a new era of mainstreaming African design. Africa has been severely underrepresented in events such as Venice Biennale due in part to the ethnic, rather than nation-based identity among many in African countries. Mainstream events are typically organized around national representation.
About Jomo Furniture
Relaunched in 2017 by designer Jomo Tariku, Jomo Furniture LLC incorporates a deep appreciation for African art and culture. The line fuses his heritage with contemporary products such as chairs, tables, pendants and interior designs that offer an alternative to mainstream styles. Jomo believes the market is ripe for disruption as current trends are spin-offs of Scandinavian and Italian masters from more than 50 years ago.
About Venice Design 2017
The second annual Venice Design 2017 will showcase the latest innovative and diverse designs from the international market. More than 50 participants (both established and emerging) from over 20 countries will converge on the Grand Canal this May 9-10 to exhibit new and unexpected solutions of space.

Joseph Walsh Studio presents “REVEAL"
May 1st –May 24th
American Irish Historical Society,
NYC Address: 991 5th Ave, New York, NY 10028, USA
Irish-based studio workshop Joseph Walsh Studio recently opened its REVEAL exhibition, a unique opportunity to view important unseen works and private commissions, as well as some of the Studio's past work, typically destined for collectors’ private residences. The exhibition is held at American Irish Historical Society (AIHS), located on Manhattan’s Museum Mile, and includes a selection of free form chairs, part of a collection of 24 individual and unique chairs developed for Chatsworth House’s private dining room, a bespoke watch cabinet and seat created for the private collection of a father and his son, as well as a series of scale models and sketches of Walsh’s recent significant 7-meter high sculpture commissioned by the Office of Public Works (OPW) on behalf of the National Gallery of Ireland under the Per Cent for Art Scheme.
Joseph Walsh established his Studio in 1999 on his family’s farm, which still hosts the original 18th century Walsh Farmhouse. Largely inspired by and appreciative of nature, his workis characterized by an ongoing curiosity about the dialogic possibilities of different materials and unison of form and functionality to create sculptural, one-of-a-kind pieces. The creative process behind these pieces is constantly fuelled by the Studio's cooperation with teams of master craftsmen, as well as apprentices and interns, coming from all over the world to realize Walsh’s design vision. The REVEAL exhibition at AIHS captures the very essence of Walsh’s design vision and inspiration, taking the viewer through a journey of some of his most unique creations.
"The REVEAL exhibition provides us with an opportunity to share the results of some of the special commissions that we have undertaken over the years, that reflect a direct dialogue and close relationship with our commissioning clients who have a particular appreciation of our work. The level of trust that was built over the years between our great patrons and us allowed us to delve into the unknown to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. To be presented at the beautiful AIHS venue, which in 2008 was the venue of ‘Realizations’ my first ever solo exhibition, REVEAL will enable us to showcase the diversity of our commissioned projects and the process behind our work, whilst unveiling the overall essence and philosophy of our studio." - Joseph Walsh, Founder of Joseph Walsh Studio

VENICE DESIGN 2017 is the large design exhibition running alongside La Biennale di Venezia. During the Art Biennial, from May 13th to November 26th 2017, VENICE DESIGN intends to show a glimpse of the approaches of today’s international designers and is a testimony as well as an evidence of the current design scene. For its second consecutive year, the exhibition will be housed by the European Cultural Centre in the historical location of Palazzo Michiel, facing the Grand Canal in the very heart of Venice.
Around 50 creators from 25 different countries and of various cultural backgrounds, ages and points in their career are invited to present their concepts and approaches towards design. Palazzo Michiel has become the place where design perspectives confront themselves and VENICE DESIGN takes the shape of an international platform for design investigations, contemporary mutations and innovative creative attitudes.
From an observation of today’s design scene, the vast and precious collection of creations in VENICE DESIGN offers a reflection on its paradoxes and analogies. Inspiring and fascinating, each creation in Palazzo Michiel is here to raise curiosity and interest towards the role of design in our daily life and dreams. Each design represents a keen research to be ultimately accomplished by the creation of an item; this may be a unique piece of furniture, a both beautiful and functional object, a light system, a piece of jewellery, an illustration or a hybrid between any of these.
In addition, VENICE DESIGN has the pleasure to host the exhibition “NO TASTE FOR BAD TASTE so Starck, so Bouroullec ...so Le French Design” by the VIA. The exhibition is taking a world tour and will be visiting Palazzo Rossini in Venice this summer. 10 essential values of French design will be highlighted by 40 iconic pieces from the be French designers among them Philippe Starck, Erwan & Ronan Bouroullec and matali crasset. The masterpieces are selected by a prestigious think-tank of 40 internationally renowned figures, with an original scenography by designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac.
While Palazzo Michiel has become the platform to host an international vision on design, VENICE DESIGN also intends to show its visitors the design landscape of Venice. A city map has been created enabling our visitors to discover around 40 independent designers all living and working in Venice. This collaboration between VENICE DESIGN and Venetian designers invites visitors to find new inspiration by exploring the singular traditions and original design processes taking place in Venice, sometimes in plain sight, sometimes tucked away in an alley.
Participating designers of VENICE DESIGN are:
Nendo (JPN), Asher Israelow Studio (USA), Kinetura (BEL), Pierre Cardin (FRA), Studio Florentijn Hofman (NLD), DEUTSU (DEU), VIA - “NO TASTE FOR BAD TASTE so Starck, so Bouroullec ... so Le French Design” (FRA), Orley Shabahang (USA), JARKEN (THA), Jouni Leino (FIN), Hervet Manufa urier (FRA), Anton Hendrik Denys (BEL), TRUE-TREU (TUR), Steen Higham (DNK), Sang Yoon Kim -Li en Communication (KOR), Alessandro Ci o (ITA), Jonathan Browning Studios (USA), Merve Kahraman (TUR), Carolin Zeyher (DEU), Gerard Kuijpers (BEL), Wael Farran (LBN), Yi Chen & Muchen Zhang (CHN), Valeria Montaña (COL), Luca Casini (ITA), Isaac Monté (NLD), Hiroki akada (JPN), LOLO PALAZZO (NLD), E údio Ronald Sasson (BRA), Jomo Tariku (USA), Studio Heike Buchfelder (DEU), Designing Cultures Studio (SGP), Marie-Louise Hellgren (SWE), Barbara Prinčič (SVN), Eckhard Beger - ArteNemus (CHE), Jenny Ritzenho (DEU), TOZ design (TUR), Leony van Schalm (NLD), Ekaterina Elizarova (RUS), MS&WOOD (BIH), ATELIER OPA (JPN), Revology (NZL), Studio KBB (DEN), Studio Nina Lieven (DEU), Ari Korolainen (FIN), Pao Hui Kao (TWN), Vedran Erceg (HRV), Daniela Buonvino (ITA), The Cabinet (HKN), Tiago Sá da Co a Design Studio (PRT), Gisela Simas - Original Pra ical Design Limited (BRA) and Carmadesign (ITA).
Whilst training in carpentry Ernst Gamperl turned to the lathe rather by chance, and embarked on his lifelong love affair with wood. Starting out an autodidact with no previous knowledge of the art, Gamperl was unhampered by convention in his approach to turnery.
From the outset he devoted his energies to the same artistic issues he was to toil at ever after. Even today he carves similar shapes time and again, improvising ever-new details, and time and again he juxtaposes structures and profiles to create a whole that is completely novel, hitherto unknown. Though Gamperl used to be ever on the lookout for precious, exotic woods, he has since come to prefer European wood like maple, beech, Italian olive tree and principally oak. During his first few years at the lathe he would turn “rough forms” out of freshly-cut wood that took a long time to dry before they could be treated, but now he exclusively uses wet wood. Gamperl’s early works display precision craftsmanship and clearcut design; his more recent receptacles employ minimalistic, archaic forms and surfaces to bring out the beauty of the wood with compelling effect.
Ernst Gamperl’s sculptures aren’t just turned on the lathe, they’re the fruit of years of painstaking toiling with his medium: wood. Over the past 20 years he has studied its drying properties and their impact on the sculpture. He knows it’s a give and take, a dialogue with the material, he can never force a shape upon it. Working out the implications of this insight is a challenge that always spurs him on.
Curved edges and bulges, projections and indentations emerge out of the natural deformation of the wood. They are part and parcel of the design, as are branches and irregular growth formations, and fissures and fractures that he consciously repairs and controls. The immanent expressive power of the material, the grain, lines and colouring, its softness or hardness, compact heaviness or paper-thin transparency is underscored by his treatment of the surfaces: waxing and polishing, scrubbing out the streaks or carving filigree parallel grooves, contrasting smooth and shiny with rough-hewn, scarred surfaces.
What makes the sculptor’s works what they are, however, is not only his virtuosity and material, but the forces that have been acting on the tree and its growth for centuries. Whether it is solitary or grove-growing, on fertile or hungry soil, exposed to wind and weather and outside influences – all these factors are engraved indelibly on the “memory of the grain” and give the receptacle its final form. Naturally enough, Gamperl is loathe to chop down a centuries-old tree, so he uses trunks that could not stand their ground against the wind or had to be felled for other reasons. On the bottom of each receptacle you’ll find the turner’s mark and work number, the year it was made and, quite importantly, the age of the tree.
To close with the words of architect Louis I. Khan, “Ask the wood what it would be.” Ernst Gamperl has the gift of turning wood into what it would be. And that’s fabulous.
