Due to his great profession in different casting processes he became a more and more all-round artist with a great diversity in creations. Ger is a sample of a self-taught man. His designs cover a versatility of day-to-day business as well as artistic expressions as religious compositions. His own view and his enthusiasm again and again lead to surprising designs. Truly Truly is a design studio operating from the Netherlands, founded by Australian designers Joel & Kate Booy. Positioned on the interface between industry and art, the studio specialises in creating artistic products for the living environment. Their work encompasses objects, furniture, lighting, textiles and spaces. Visit the Website: www.studiotrulytruly.com Digital has brought us two revolutions before, that led to enormous leaps in efficiency. First in communication, then in computation. Today we are in the middle of the third, and potentially most influential digital revolution; that of fabrication. But what happens when this streak of digitisation starts to affect our physical world of materials? Digital fabrication processes are increasingly allowing us to design our materials, but the physical results remain analogue; continuous and solid. What if we could assemble these materials with small separate building blocks that can be used again in other configurations - like the way LEGO bricks are re-used to form new structures, or atoms are re-used to form new molecules? As digital processes can be reversed; could the fabrication of an object then be ‘undone’? Neil Gershenfeld and his research group at the Centre for Bits and Atoms at MIT are quite seriously working towards this poetic future of digital materials. Their work has been the main inspiration for this project. When Digital Gets Physical is an ongoing research project exploring applications of digital materials at different scales. The laws of digital building offer huge potential in terms of structural efficiency and material re-use, and this project is looking to deploy that potential in present-day contexts. As the first outcome of this journey, this piece is meant to visualize the concept of digital material and translate its core principles to physical shape. The chair is assembled from aluminium tetrahedrons and spheres, that - when tightened by the inner cables - form a lightweight octet truss lattice, inspired by the way atoms form crystallic structures. When the tension is released, the shape disappears and the ‘material’ returns to its initial state; ready to be reconfigured. The development of this chair was done in collaboration with After-Form. Visit the Website: www.ddw.nl/en/event/1381 Design and waste, our two loves. Combining the two makes us happy. Thats why we love to join projects that have these elements. Here’s some of the projects we were involved in recently. The StoneCycling concept initially started at the Design Academy in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. During his graduation project, co-founder of the company Tom van Soest, focused on getting the full potential out of waste in order to create new building material. Starting only with raw waste material, Tom began grinding, blending and processing them in different ways. This led to surprising results as he uncovered the great potential and value of waste material. In 2013 he founded StoneCycling together with Ward Massa. Since then, StoneCycling has pioneered the way in the design, development, and production of building material from waste. StoneCycling has been featured in numerous publications around the world, such as the Guardian, Smithsonian Magazine, Co.Design and the Neue Zürcher Zeitung. Architects value the focus on sustainability without having to compromise on style/design. The very first house built with StoneCycling’s WasteBasedBricks was completed in 2016. We never do things alone. We work closely with leading architects, designers, construction companies and developers from around the world. And through this network we are creating a more circular world, where waste is no longer viewed as waste. SAM VAN GURP x ESTHER JONGSMA VANTOT is the collective title for the works of Esther Jongsma and Sam van Gurp. Both Eindhoven based designers graduated at Design Academy Eindhoven. Operating from The Netherlands VANTOT focuses on autonomous product design and commissioned work. In 2014, Esther Jongsma (1990, Utrecht) and Sam van Gurp (1990, Breda) launched their own design studio called VANTOT. Esther and Sam both graduated from the Design academy Eindhoven in 2008-2009. Esther is outgoing and looks at her designs from a broad perspective: "I love to work with many people from different disciplines". Besides working on her own design collections, Esther also works as a project manager and coordinator for multiple projects and has already gained considerable experience in the design and realisation of exhibitions. Sam, in many ways, is the polar opposite of Esther and focuses on business development to the tiniest detail. Besides that, he is a real creator and a technician who loves to deal with progressive design questions. The designs of studio VANTOT all encompass a certain complexity. For example, the pendant lamp series Exploded View and Limpid Lights. These series allow for the adjustment of the intensity of light and colour by moving the light source in the hood. Besides that, there is the Passage Carpet that creates intriguing optical effects by means of an intricate geometric pattern of layered wood as you walk by. According to Sam, who is often inspired by engineering works and ingenious movement mechanisms, the studio likes "to experiment with movement and new interpretations of familiar features". Furthermore, as explained by Esther, VANTOT aims "to involve the user differently”. Visit the Website: www.vantot.com As an artist, I try to make this dizzyingly complex unity tangible by scaling it back to imaginable proportions. As such, I study methods through which people make the world logical or meaningful, such as science and religion. I combine these rational and spiritual systems in my work; in my opinion, geometry and the mystical go together very well. Inversion is a technique I use often for this. I put things that are insignificant and worthless on a pedestal, while I relativize things that are considered sacred and valuable. Concrete objects and behaviour that refer to abstract values intrigue me. Nothing around us has intrinsic value; all meaning we perceive is attributed by us ourselves. There seems to be an enormous difference between a sheet of toilet paper and communion bread, but in material terms there is little to distinguish the two. It is the state and treatment of the goods that differs greatly. It fascinates me how we can convince ourselves and one another of the sense and the logic of certain notions. I like to make my audience aware of this willingness and capacity by making use of it in a way that is as playful as it is convincing and transparent. As an artist, I allow myself to take on an insidious naivety, and I create an open atmosphere in my work, where there is as much room for seriousness and recognition as there is for humour and estrangement. I use my position as an artist as a licence to gain entrance to many different, sometimes inaccessible, places. I have done work in a church, a zoo, a hospital, a brothel, a camp site and a cemetery. In such places, I ask for explanations and information about everything that I notice and everything that surprises me. I document, analyse and measure my objects of research with equal amounts of zeal and perspective, and I stylize and ritualize my methods. Sometimes I involve my audience in this process. I organize and present the data I have gathered as directly, accessibly and clearly as possible. Graphic design forms an important part of my work. I like to give people a souvenir to take home as a reminder of the experience my work has given them (pamphlets, posters, cards). I strive to make my audience feel like they are part of the world, and vice versa: to make my audience feel that the world is inside them. It is the connections that we make between ourselves and things around us that make our existence and our encounters interesting and meaningful. I want to share the feelings of wonder that can be evoked by research into the systems in and around us. Secondly, they are a reference for their clients, for us, but also for the producer because of the inspiring atmosphere they create in their stores. These independent entrepreneurs are game changers and strong-minded synergy composers, and it shows in their boutiques. The story of VAN VERRE Suzanne Mertens, founder and now creative director of VAN VERRE, is a creative and conceptual thinker with a good eye for detail. She is intrigued by craftsmanship and the creativity that many cultures carry. Inspired by her many journeys along the historical trade routes and guided by her creativity, curiosity, and fascination with other cultures and social engagement, she discovers the finest products. She believes that fairness in trade lays the groundwork for a flourishing and ethical business, and therefore co-created VAN VERRE; a perfect example of a respectful company was born. Suzanne is joined by Gerard de Rooij, an enthusiastic and successful entrepreneur who is also driven by bringing cultures together. He is business-minded and has led VAN VERRE to be a modern, conscious and mindful business partner. Visit the Website: http://comelite-arch.com Over the last two decades, the acclaimed international designer Marcel Wanders has added his stardust to a range of products and projects that range from lighting by Flos to kids high chairs by Cybex, he has designed interiors for quite a few luxury hotels too.
It goes without saying that Marcel has saved some really cool ideas for the collections presented by the brand he co-founded: MOOI. The Dutch purveyor of accessible high end elements is synonymous with quality and modern confidence. Where else could a hazy mix of colours - that sit somewhere between a hippy daze and grandmas's flowery kitchen napkins - result in a modernity and depth fusion the likes that we struggle to find in much of the ubiquitous and awfully snore inducing minimalist contributions on the scene currently. Marcel Wanders and MOOI don't do the lacklustre. These carpets are reasonably priced but indeed they are unreasonably beautiful and will last a lifetime. Visit MOOI today at: www.moooicarpets.com |
